Aardehond Border Terriers

Rally takes Obedience to a higher level. In this sport, the dog and handler move through a course of ten to twenty stations, each of them designated by a sign showing the next required exercise. Some of the exercises mirror Obedience requirements, and some are more difficult. For example:

  • Spiral Right - Dog Outside
  • Straight Figure 8 Weave Twice
  • Serpentine - weave once
  • Back up 3 steps - dog stays in position

The signs* for each of these look like this:

Halo earning her RL1 titleIn general, the handler is encouraged to positively communicate with the dog, using such methods as talk, praise, hand-clapping, and even patting the legs (although physical corrections are not permitted). Negative communications, like loud or harsh commands, are penalized.

Rally is fun for both dog and handler. Reggie earned his Rally Novice (RN) title on April 23, 2007, by receiving qualifying scores on three consecutive days ... pretty darned good for a dog who has never participated in any obedience trials! Reggie then earned his Rally Advanced (RA) title on July 21, 2007, by receiving qualifying scores at three consecutive rally trials.

Halo and I participated in an Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) rally trial on January 5 - 6, 2008, where she earned her RL1 (equal to the AKC Rally Novice title) in three straight trials, as well as her first leg towards a RL1X championship title.
